Where might you see the DJs in public performances over the next two months?  Try E-Fest.  You might also see them at private parties, weddings and festivals.  Some are recording.  Ask them. Try XM.  Many DJs play in clubs and market their music in that fashion.  Others spend weeks and months recording and creating and showcase their music in events of this nature.  Some spend their time in various genres and specific types of parties and celebrations.  Many of these parties are private and the public does not often get a chance to see these performers unless they hire the show.  The DJ will not invite you to somebody else's party and certainly not to somebody else's wedding.

E-Fest is an excellent opportunity to see some really talented people entertain some other really talented people and the public at large.

At the very bottom of this page, please read the article which details why a wedding planner
or a wedding vendor
MUST attend this event, beyond the simple matter that it will be filled
with young single ladies, many of whom will marry in the two or three years following the event.

The following is a discussion from the viewpoint of business management of an event of this nature.  It by no means should detract from the fun and party atmosphere.  It is just a bit of the business underpinning which encourages business people to attend events of this nature.  Please feel free to ignore any business reason and simply come to the party, drink as responsibly as you can and have more fun than you can stand.  It really is a grand music festival and not a business netmeet.  The purpose of the following writing is to encourage certain categories of people to attend by demonstrating some of the benefits not clearly shown in the top ten list.

Business Reasons for the Free Musical Event
by Basil Hoyl, Attorney at Law
Manager, DJ DFW

I would like to take a moment and consider what should be the target audience for an event of this nature.  Well girls of course, and all manner of beautiful people, happy people, athletic people, fun people and business people, but who do the DJs really want to have there that day?  People say lawyers spoil the party, but without sound business practices, events will not have the financial success necessary to have them and then there is no party and no light and no music.  Since there is no cover charge and the DJs are playing for free, how can an event of this nature attract DJs and provide quality entertainment for the audience?

1.        First, the party has to be fun.  The production must be first class.  DJs and entertainers must be qualified, musical and entertaining.  If the people at the event do not have fun, they will not take away positive impressions.  The event requires organization and coordination.  Equipment must be provided, entertainers must be lined up and there is more work on this end than anybody could know.  In this event, the producers DJ Foxx and DJ Prototype have done an extremely good job planning for the very best entertainment, arranging a good venue and getting equipment appropriate for the event.  Many of the performers also contributed effort and equipment to the success of this event.  From the standpoint of the performer, minimal effort is required as the equipment is provided through the efforts of the producers and the performer need only bring the content and art.  Please do not strike me for writing that.  I know some of the artists have been working months and months preparing and recording their music for this.  The DJ is not being paid, but they do not have to arrange the event production.

2.        Second, the party must be attended.  Promotion of this event is accomplished through several channels.  The media is interested.  We issued press releases and have been contacted by the press for additional information.  It is further advertised by distribution of flyers and posters and word of mouth.  We are listed in several Internet outlets as well and in various print media.  This is a free event and therefore paid advertising is more difficult to obtain, and while there is some sponsorship, there are more sponsorship opportunities.  Good venue selection by the producers helped.  Proper attendence at the event will compensate the venue.          Having a good event with  interesting content and activities and getting the word out about the event, and having it on the proper date all contribute to success. This is a newsworthy event because of the nature of the production.  It is not every day that fifteen DJs will play in one place at one time in one genre of music.  This is a DJ's DJ party and it is what DJs play for other DJs.  The public gets insight to what DJs like and what they create.  It is also about the public because the DJs really want to have people dance and have fun. That is what they live to do and what they do to live.  They also want to show the public and the DJ community what they can do to move the people.

3.        Third, why would a good, working DJ want to play at a free festival?  It will be fun.  Beyond the whole beer, girls, guys, tunes, sun and fun there are artistic reasons.  Free expression of the musical arts to a free audience is exhilarating.  Sharing the musical and entertainment style with other DJs and hearing what they are doing keeps the DJ in touch with the DJ community and gives the DJ ideas to use in their own performances.  We all laugh when we say the gig does not pay much but it is great exposure, but properly promoted, there is the opportunity to network with other DJs and people who attend the event. A targeted audience concept is employed.  After the general information is passed to public outlets, the promotion is directed to a targeted audience of party, event and wedding planners and vendors for parties, events and weddings.

4.
Why would Wedding and Event Planners, Photographers, Caterers and Other Vendors want to attend?   It is an excellent opportunity for these people         to network with each other at a fun event.  They can bring their clients and let them see different DJs and consider if the client would like to have one of them DJ at a function.  They might meet someone attending to check out the DJs who has not yet settled on a Caterer or a Photographer.  They might meet a wedding or party planner and visit a while.  The Wedding and Party planner has the strongest reason of all to attend.  They can use their attendance as a marketing tool and in negotiation and discussion with their clients and at other networking functions. It shows how hard they work to find talent.   Someone who refers business to DJs can see fifteen DJs perform in one place on one day and decide who they like and who they want to refer to their clients.   They want their clients to have good and reliable entertainment which reflects positively on their wise choice in recommending this particular DJ.  It could be that  they saw the DJ perform at a wedding and that is where they made contact.  But by attending this event, they can use the attendence as a marketing tool for two  years or more!          A simple statement in their negotiations with their customer such as:

"In the Party/Wedding/Event/Whatever  planning business we try to stay in touch with the latest trends and evaluate talent.  Why, last-week/month/back-in-August/recently  I attended E-Fest where fifteen DJs performed for an audience of other DJs and some Party/Wedding/Event/Whatever planners in public and I checked out who was good and who  was really good.  I  compared them with who I heard in the clubs and at various weddings, events and parties.  Now, you could do this type of thing yourself if you had the time to go to events like this and if you did so over a period of years and you could find the type of entertainment best suited to what you want for your party/Wedding/Event/Whatever or you could pick up the yellow pages or google and get someone you don't know.  But you hired me to (be your Party/wedding/event/whatever planner to) help you find the talent.  I work hard to bring the best current talent to you and do not  wait for DJs to call me or leave their cards at my door when evaluating entertainers.  I work hard to seek out the best for you so you don't have to."

In short, when a wedding or party planner attends E-Fest, it adds value to their business.  At the same time, they can have a beer, play sand volleyball, catch some rays and generally have a great time.  Does it really sound like hard work?  Find what you love to do and find a way to make a living doing it.  Attending festivals of this nature is part of the hard work of having a successful party/event/wedding planning business.  Yes, we extend a personal invitation to you!

5.        Keep Me in Mind.  See and be seen.  When the DJ is seen or when the photographer, caterer, vendor and wedding planner is seen at an event of this nature, they are brought to the front of the mind of others who might refer business to them or do business with them.  You can see who is interested in the latest trends and who is interested in providing the latest and best to their clients.  And they will see you.  Who will be in their mind when someone asks if they know someone who handles that type of business.  Why, they just say you at E-Fest!  Maybe you bonded over beer or volleyball.  Maybe you will meet a future spouse at E-Fest. If not your future spouse, then perhaps a young single person with a wedding or a party in their near future is in your near future at E-Fest.

Lots of DJs played lots of tunes and the musical program was very strong.  All manner of media created the sounds from vinyl to computers to disks.  Special thanks go to Todd Boyd who pointed out technical corrections to the setup which allowed the show to go on.  Todd took the stage like a general on the battlefield and everyone appreciated his great advice and help.  The day was long and hot, but the beer was cold and wet.  Three dozen lucky young ladies received hot shorts, courtesy of DJ DFW.
